J-rock goes English
One Ok Rock
35xxxv
Warner Music Thailand
The popular Japanese rock band One OK Rock recently released an English-language version of their seventh album 35xxxv.
The 15-track album opens with the track "3xxxv5," where soft keyboard gives way to lead singer Taka’s screaming vocals. The emotional surge of "Take Me to the Top" follows in a similar style. "Mighty Long Fall" starts quietly but builds up to a huge chorus, before the album’s ballad, "Heartache." The song has Taka singing about the heartache of losing a loved one.
One track is unlike the usual One OK Rock style. "Paper Plane," featuring Kellin from Sleeping With Sirens, has more of a pop feel which doesn’t suit the band. But after that, there’s more screaming and one more ballad to come.
Overall, many songs on this album are catchy in the style of bands like Linkin Park, and you can imagine yourself rocking and jumping around while listening. —SK
