Students to get a discount

Students will be offered a 50 percent discount on subway fares for two months to help deal with the rising cost of living, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand announced on May 10.

The discount will be offered for two months from the beginning of the new school term, which for most schools and universities is the middle of May.

MRTA official Yodyuth Boonyatikarn said the discount is for school and university students, who currently enjoy a 20 percent discount on subway tickets.

Network plans panel

A medical network plans to ask the government to set up a committee to oversee medical fees in private hospitals, following claims of overcharging.

Preeyanan Lorsermvattana, president of the Thai Medical Error Network, on May 10 said a petition with 33,000 signatures backing the creation of the panel will be submitted to the Public Health Ministry and the National Reform Council panel on reform of consumer protection on May 11.

The move comes after some relatives of patients petitioned the government to demand justice after they received bills totalling more than one million baht.

Off track

Rail route closed for maintenance

The Ban Laem to Mae Klong rail route will be closed. The State Railway of Thailand announced the news on May 7. The route will be closed for maintenance from May 13 to November 8, officials said.
