Speakeasy

Yeah, right

In this weeks conversation, Joe, Nok and Noi are arguing about music.

They all have different opinions, but they all use similar expressions, which are underlined. Read the conversation and then do the exercise about the expressions meanings. Remember to try to catch these expressions when you watch English-language TV or movies and use them yourselves.

Joe: I went to see Scorpions live last month. It was the first time Ive been to a rock concert, and it was awesome.

Nok: Yeah, right. A bunch of old men singing karaoke classics? Id rather watch the TV.

Noi: Right. And I hear The Eagles are coming to Bangkok. How come all these crusty old bands get all the attention when weve got Big Ass, Bodyslam and Clash. Joe, youre a traitor to Thai music.

Joe: Alright, yeah I admit it, I love watching talented musicians perform, however old they are. Is that such a crime?

Noi: Look, Id rather go to a club or karaoke bar than a stadium show, alright? I cant sit down and enjoy music I cant think of anything more boring than sitting through three hours of guitar solos.

Exercise

Look at the context in which the underlined words are used and then decide whether they are expressing agreement, disagreement or are being used in another sense.
