Whats spinning this week

Boyd Kosiyabong
Songs from Different Scenes # 3
Bakery Music

There are plenty of certainties that go along with any Boyd Kosiyabong album. One is that every album will feature plenty of different singers. Another is that mellow singer Nop Ponchamni will sing at least one song. And, most importantly, Boyds albums always include some great songs. Songs from Different Scenes # 3 meets all three expectations.

The album has 18 tracks on two CDs. The tracks vary from soundtracks to TV commercials to songs from live concerts to songs Boyd wrote and composed himself.

Getting the most work is Ben Tantiwut, helping out with four songs. With his powerful voice and the tracks uplifting lyrics and tunes, Ben does a perfect job on each.

Ben is one of several artists featured on this album who plan to release their own albums in the near future. Kamala Sukosol and Mariam Alkalary plan to do the same.

All of the artists sing well, but so many of the songs are sweet love ballads that listeners may get annoyed before the album is finished. A good album, but those who dont like things too sweet may be better off waiting for Bens solo effort. Suwitcha Chaiyong

Shaznay Lewis
Open
Warner

Trying to put her days in the UK girl group All Saints in the past, Shaznay Lewis is back with the sassy, funky pop album Open. Right off, it seems strange that Shaznay chose the cliched,  radio pop number I Never Felt Like This Before as the first single; it is one of the worst tracks on an otherwise fun album.

The rest of the songs blend pop, soul, funk and a touch of reggae into a very listenable effort. The reggae infused My Dawg, the trumpet tinged Heart Made Me a Fool and the funky Dance are all standout tracks.

With a voice that recalls a strange combination of Macy Gray and Beyonce, Shaznay certainly has talent. Now if only she would put her silly, girly pop days behind her for good. Chris Blake
