Did you know
Kyary’s “Fashion Monster” won best pop video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in Japan.
It will definitely be a blast when 30 top artists perform at Sonic Bang: the Ultimate International Music Festival. Headlining acts include Jason Mraz, Pitbull and Far East Movement. Also playing are Japanese acts Scandal and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Korean stars Rain and Epik High, and local legends Stamp Apiwat, Flure and Room 39.
Before the festival kicks off on August 24 at Muang Thong Thani, Student Weekly had an online chats with Japanese singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Korean hip-hop group Epik High.
Epik High was formed by the trio of Tablo, 31, Mithra Jin, 30, DJ Tukutz, 31, back in 2003. The guys had to work hard, since hip-hop wasn’t popular in Korea at the time. After a few years, the group hit the big time with their meaningful lyrics and beautiful music on hits like “Fly” and “Paris,” which were featured on their third album, Swan Songs. Their latest album, 99, was released last year.
SMART RAPPERS
Tablo, who is a graduate of America’s prestigious Stanford University, explained that the name Epik High means that the group is high on life. Despite their happy name, the group isn’t afraid to tackle serious issues in their songs.
Tablo said that the songs “Fan,” “Excuses” and “Dear TV” would be good tracks to introduce Epik High to newcomers. “Fan” is the only song of the three that is about love. The other two English language songs, meanwhile, are critical of elements of society.
TEAM WORK
The lyrics for every song on 99 were written by Tablo and Mithra. Tablo said that he usually comes up with the initial idea for a song, which he then develops with Mithra.
Since Korean hip-hop groups rarely perform in Thailand, we asked the guys why they decided to perform at Sonic Bang. Tablo simply replied, “Thailand is awesome!”
EPIC HIGHLIGHT
Tablo said that Epik High’s live performances are so bad that they’re awesome. The rapper then asked if Thai fans could prepare to make some noise when Epik High performs at Sonic Bang.
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a Japanese model and fashion blogger who had a massive hit with her debut 2011 single, “Pon Pon Pon.” With its catchy melody and Kyary’s unique style, the song’s music video attracted more than 50 million views and topped iTunes Electronic Songs charts in Belgium and Finland.
Last January, this 20-year-old star lunched her album Nanda Collection, before embarking on her 100%KPP World Tour. The tour included performances in Europe, Asia and the US.
Student Weekly: How do you feel about being described as Japan’s Lady Gaga?
Kyary: I admire Lady Gaga, but when it comes to my fashion sense, I’ve never really thought about her.
Student Weekly: What was the idea behind the fancy music video for your latest single, “Invader Invader”?
Kyary: The word “Invader” makes me think about space and the future, so I went the opposite way and wore vintage outfits, while the set was a spacecraft.
Student Weekly: Did fans in Europe and America react to your music differently to your Japanese fans?
Kyary: Fans outside Japan are very vigorous. Japanese fans tend to be shyer. As a performer, I enjoy both.
Student Weekly: How did you feel about becoming an animated character in the show, Crayon Shin-chan?
Kyary: Crayon Shin-chan has been my favourite manga for a long time. I was a bit nervous doing voice acting with professional actors, but I was honoured to have my own character. I also sang the theme song.
Student Weekly: What can Thai fans expect at your performance?
Kyary: My live performance will consist of colourful outfits and energetic dancing, so it should be fun. Most of my songs have distinctive dances and moves, so it will be great if everybody can dance with me!
