The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is a landlocked Southeast Asian country that borders with Thailand. Between the two countries runs the Mekong River, along which are some beautiful frontier Lao towns such as Huay Xai, which is just across the river from northern Chiang Rai province.

For Freeze Frame this week, SW looks at some of the interesting sites in Huay Xai.

The Mekong River that runs along the borders of Laos and northeastern Thailand is a beautiful landmark where visitors can enjoy beautiful scenic views.

Not far from the Mekong River in Huay Xai, Laos is the Morning Market, which offers a variety of local vegetables, clothes and daily household necessities.

Vat Chome Khaou Maniratn is the oldest temple in Huay Xai. Its gold-coloured roof tiles can be clearly seen from across the Mekong River.

Sri Don Chai Temple in Chiang Khong is famed for the highly respected Buddha image, Luang Pho Phetch.

Local commuters and foreign visitors usually use a ferry to cross the Mekong River from Thailand to Laos. The service charge is 40 baht for a single trip.
